Due to the slipperiness, accidents occurred in several places in the country on Friday. Skaters also fell through the ice and ambulance personnel were busy due to the falls. The KNMI predicts that it may still freeze this weekend and that winter showers may also fall.
The slipperiness has caused road accidents in various parts of the country. A car went into the water in Utrecht and a car overturned on the A28 near Zeist. An accident also occurred at the Rijnsweerd junction where the A27 and A28 converge.
A 50-year-old motorist died in an accident in Zeeland on Friday. In addition, two traffic accidents were reported in Flevoland.
It is also dangerous for cyclists and pedestrians to take the road. “Here is urgent advice to pay attention to the bicycle,” the security regions of North Holland reported on Friday. “Small streets and slippery sidewalks pose a risk of falling. Be careful when stepping out.”
Safety regions Zeeland and Hollands Midden warn that ambulance workers are busy with those injured by the slippery surface. In Zeeland, additional personnel were employed for ambulance services. In and around Leiden, Gouda, the security region also advises people to stay at home as much as possible and only travel if necessary.
The skaters fell through the ice in several places
Skaters fell on the ice in different parts of the country on Friday. This happened in Amsterdam-Noord, Loosdrecht and Brabant, among others.
A dead person was found in the water in Huisseling in Brabant. The victim was pulled out of the water with ice and all, because the deceased had been lying there for some time. The police are investigating and cannot yet say whether it was a woman or a man.
In Amsterdam-Noord, a skater was pulled out of the water with an extendable ladder, after which the person was taken to hospital. In Loosdrecht, a skater who fell into the ice was rushed to hospital due to hypothermia. In Utrecht, too, the security region was called in several times to rescue the skaters from the water.
In Overijssel people are advised not to go on natural ice. In many places the ice is too thin and skating can be life threatening, not least because rescue is not nearby. The skating association KNSB currently advises against open water skating.
Thawing since Monday
The KNMI predicts that it may still freeze on Saturday and Sunday. After an overnight with light to moderate frost again, it will be cold on Saturday with temperatures around freezing in many locations. Most places will stay dry.
During the night from Saturday to Sunday it will be slightly to moderately freezing again. This is the last night of frost for now. Rain will fall in many locations on Sunday evening. As the roads warm up reasonably during the day and the temperature no longer drops during the evening hours, there will be no large-scale slipperiness.
It will defrost by Monday. The temperature will end up in double digits next week with 10 or 11 degrees. On Tuesday it can be 13 degrees locally.
