Manufacturer: ‘Janssen vaccine protects for at least 8 months, even…

One shot, and you are protected against the coronavirus for at least eight months, even if it is the more aggressive delta variant. That is what producer Johnson & Johnson concludes from recent tests.

“Eight months into the experiment, we see that one inoculation of the Janssen vaccine elicits strong antibody production that does not waste away, but just improves over time,” said Dr Mathai Mammen, head of research and development at the vaccination arm of pharmaceutical company Janssen.

In comparison, the vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna remain effective for at least six months, according to the manufacturers. Independent researchers obtained results showing that this protection would last much longer, even years.

Effective against delta variant

According to an own study by the American pharmaceutical company, the antibodies and cells of the immune system also neutralize the delta variant of the virus in eight vaccinated people. A second study in twenty patients confirmed this result.

The company maintains that one shot of the vaccine is enough, although it is working with the American Institute of Public Health to investigate whether two shots would give a better result.

One or two doses?

The European medicines agency EMA recently confirmed that the four vaccines approved in the EU, Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, AstraZeneca and Janssen, all offer protection against the delta variant. Except in the case of the Janssen vaccine, there are two doses needed, emphasizes the EMA.

The World Health Organization warned on Thursday of a possible new wave in the corona pandemic in Europe, carried by the delta variant. In Africa, the number of cases is rising at an alarming rate, the organization said, and the virus is also making a comeback in Asian countries.
