Manuel Rando highlights the role of DPT in the early detection program for breast cancer in rural areas

Rando, during the visit to the unit together with the deputy Rosario Pascual, the councilor of Cella Aurora Lanzuela and the radio diagnosis technician Mª Jesús Mansilla.
The president of the Diputación de Teruel, Manuel Rando, has claimed the role of the Diputación de Teruel (DPT) so that the early detection program for breast cancer of the Government of Aragón reaches rural areas through the mobile unit that runs through the Province. During a visit to the service during his stay in Cella, he recalled that the provincial institution finances the transfer of this equipment, owned by Health, hiring a tractor unit for which an annual investment of 11,000 euros is expected.
The itineraries of the Mobile Screening Unit for the early detection of breast cancer are completed every two years. They include 26 municipalities and the capital of the province as heads of health zones in the two sectors of the province, Teruel and Alcañiz. The target population at this time exceeds 19,000 women between the ages of 50 and 69, who receive a personalized citation when the truck is going to arrive in their area.

“This service is an example that when you want to bring services closer to municipalities, to rural areas, you can. And in the Diputación de Teruel we are very proud of our participation in the program”, assured Manuel Rando before the Mobile Unit installed next to the Cella Health Center.

For the president, who was accompanied by the deputy for Social Welfare Rosario Pascual and the councilor for culture of the Cellano City Council Aurora Lanzuela, “everything that is put in place so that those of us who live in rural areas have it easier, can be applied to any service, it is very positive. And, furthermore, this program saves lives, so its maintenance is even more important”.
The radiodiagnosis technician Mª Jesús Mansilla showed the equipment of the Unit, with up-to-date technology and sufficient to perform screening tests on all women in the daily population. Once the test is done, they are informed of the result and when they should return for the next review. If they must continue the study of the breast, they are referred to the reference hospital, where the diagnosis and treatment, if appropriate, continue.
The participation of the women cited is 84%. 96% obtain a negative result (there is no disease) and only 4% need to complete the study with other tests. Since the beginning of the program in 1999, 491 cancers have been detected in the province of Teruel, most of them in early stages, when treatments are less aggressive and with better results.
After its stop in Cella, the tractor cabin financed by the Diputación de Teruel moved the Mobile Unit to Albarracín and, subsequently, to Santa Eulalia and Monreal del Campo. Generally, the Unit spends in each locality from four or five days to three weeks, depending on the number of women summoned.
