Manuel Neuer’s comeback in the goal of FC Bayern Munich is getting closer and closer.
According to recent reports, the star goalkeeper could be back on the pitch after the international break. However, how long and whether the now 37-year-old will be able to play at the top level again is anyone’s guess.
Accordingly, the goalkeeper position for the record champions remains a much-discussed topic. Neuer’s current replacement Sven Ulreich too often doesn’t perform at the required level and Daniel Peretz, who was brought in in the summer, doesn’t seem to be a real option either. But another solution could now emerge as Plan B.
Casteels departure already decided
According to the “Wolfsburger Allgemeine Zeitung”, the people of Munich are currently dealing with VfL support Koen Casteels. The Belgian has been under contract at Wolfsburg since 2015, has been one of the best goalkeepers in the Bundesliga for years and has made 264 appearances in the Bundesliga so far.
Interesting for Bayern: Casteels’ contract expires in the summer and will definitely not be extended. His departure on a free transfer at the end of the season has already been communicated by the club and a successor, Poland’s Kamil Grabara, has already been signed for the coming years.
The 31-year-old could potentially be available at a bargain price in winter and then free of charge in summer anyway. Whether Bayern want to react in January is probably entirely up to Manuel Neuer. It remains to be seen how specifically the people of Munich will generally deal with Casteel’s personality as the successor to the world goalkeeper.
