Manchester United’s Struggling Goalkeeper Situation: Erik ten Hag and Andre Onana in Trouble

Manchester

Andrew Onan brought Erik ten Hag specifically to be the main goalkeeper Manchester United. But his performance so far makes the situation complicated.

Manchester United have had an inconclusive start to the season. Of the 11 matches that have taken place in all competitions, the ‘Red Devils’ have only won five wins while the rest ended in defeat.

This series of results has at least put two figures in a difficult position: Erik ten Hag and Andre Onana. Ten Hag began to be questioned after last season brilliantly led MU to finish in the top four and win the English League Cup.

Even after being supported by management with the recruitment of Mason Mount, Onana, Rasmus Hojlund, and Sofyan Amrabat, Ten Hag did not seem to be taking MU forward. Especially for Onana, he is also under massive pressure.

Brought in as a replacement for David de Gea in the main goalkeeper position, he has conceded 19 goals in 11 appearances. Not to mention a number of blunders that put him in the spotlight.

Former Fulham and Chelsea goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer believes that Onana is basically not the type to stop good chances. Meanwhile, so far he has also been unable to play to his advantage, namely ball distribution, because of England’s aggressive pressing.

“I’ve watched Onana quite often in the last few years. I know he played well, last season at Inter, but I always questioned how good a goalkeeper he was,” Schwarzer told Optus Sport as reported by Football365.

“I know, I know he’s good with his feet. But he also used to play in leagues where his team would dominate the game, whether it was Ajax or Inter, and had more time on the ball, they weren’t pressed as much.”

“His energy and high tempo are not the same. So that’s always the big question too. So if he’s not good with his feet, what else is he good at?” he added.

Schwarzer compared him to former Manchester City goalkeeper Claudio Bravo. At that time, Bravo was optimal because it was supported by a team that was able to maximize its qualities.

The former Australian national team goalkeeper believes Onana will be in a more difficult situation if Ten Hag is ultimately fired by MU.

“We saw it in Claudio Bravo when he first joined Manchester City. A goalkeeper who was very, very good at using his feet, but found gaps because technically, he didn’t feel like the best goalkeeper,” he continued.

“I honestly think Bravo is a better goalkeeper than Onana, let’s be honest. So yeah, a total disaster. It couldn’t have been a worse start at Old Trafford.”

“I don’t know if he’ll be able to get himself out of trouble now. And I think if Ten Hag loses his job, Onana will be finished.”
