Stoke City manager Michael O’Neill admits he is “delighted” to have beaten Celtic and Rangers to the signing of Charlton Athletic winger Alfie Doughty, in quotes reported by the Scottish Sun.

The January transfer window has been quiet across Europe, but if there is one club that can be satisfied with the business it has done, it is the Potters.

In Rabbi Matondo and Jack Clarke, Stoke has signed two wingers who, in their day, are capable of instilling fear in the heart of the Championship wingers.

Speaking of wingers, Wales international Rhys Norrington-Davies also feels like a good deal after impressing during the first half of the season in Luton Town.

Doughty, however, could turn out to be the best signing of the lot.

The 21-year-old joined for a £ 650,000 bargain after Charlton decided to cash in on a player who was due to become a free agent in July.

“There are a number of things that are attractive about Alfie and, first of all, potential is the most important,” says former Northern Ireland boss O’Neill, admitting that Doughty also received offers from Scotland.

“He is a player who was very attractive to cross-border teams, in particular Rangers and Celtic, who could get him at an extremely good price, a good value.

“If Alfie had a longer term contract, we would not have been able to bring him to the club for which we are bringing him to the club.

“We are delighted to incorporate Alfie. It fits the profile of the type of player we want. He is young, enthusiastic and wants to prove himself «.

Celtic flopped with two offers for Doughty in the summer and his move to the Potteries won’t be to the liking of the Parkhead faithful, who have raised concerns about the lack of new faces on a team desperately in need of a restart.

The Rangers, at least, have a couple of talented young wingers on their radar, notably Francis Amuzu of Anderlecht and Scott Wright of Aberdeen.
