Man Stuns Doctors with Octopus Stuck in Esophagus After Eating Live Squid

Have you ever considered trying “sannakji” – eating a live squid? You will probably put that thought aside after reading this.

A 55-year-old man from Singapore stunned doctors when he turned up with an octopus stuck in his esophagus. The news agency Jam Press reports.

Sannakji is according to the blog tastesseoulgood a Korean delicacy – and can be eaten in two different ways.

The first way is to divide it into small pieces and at the same time watch how the squid wriggles around on the plate, while adding a little sesame oil.

– I thought “what the hell”

The other way is to wrap the live octopus around a chopstick, dip it in sesame oil and eat it in one go.

Got stuck

The 55-year-old chose the latter and quickly began to feel ill.

According to Jam Press, he vomited.

He also had problems swallowing and therefore visited the hospital Tan Tock Seng in Singapore.

According to Wikipedia is eating sannakji potentially dangerous due to choking hazard, especially for intoxicated persons.

Found a dead rat in the food

– It is because it can use the suction cups and attach itself to the neck, they write.

In the UK, sannakji is banned due to a high number of cases of food poisoning.

Doctors for suspension

The doctors performed a CT scan of the neck. Afterwards, they performed an esophagoscopy.

This is according to Large Medical Encyclopedia (SML) a procedure performed using an endoscope – a long, thin tube with a light and a video camera on the end.

Used pliers

The doctors first tried to extract the squid from the 55-year-old’s neck, but it did not budge.

They then tried to maneuver the endoscope past the squid to get a good grip around it.

Increases sharply: – Very disturbing

Then they also used pliers and grabbed hold of the mollusc’s head.

This time they succeeded, and the man was discharged from hospital two days later.

The Korea Times wrote in 2019 a case about a 71-year-old man who choked to death after eating cut-up but wriggling squid.
