Man on trial for allegedly causing pregnant woman’s death while taking a selfie

31-year-old Fawziyah Javed died in September 2021 after falling from the cliffs below the landmark Arthur’s Seat in Edinburgh, Scotland.

The emergency services must have quickly arrived at the scene, but the life of the pregnant woman could not be saved. The unborn child also died.

During the trial, which is now underway, firefighter Sean Stratford claims that a man approached him while he was trying to save the woman.

The man then allegedly said that he ran into the woman by accident while trying to take a selfie. This printer Sky News.

Javed’s husband is accused of the murder, but denies guilt.

Played the emergency call

Stratford was among those who responded to the incident, which happened at around 9pm. In court, he says that the emergency personnel did not find the woman at first, but that a man pointed out the area for them.

– He said that he had stood up to take a selfie, that he slipped and bumped into her, so that she fell, says the fireman in his explanation.

Javed’s husband was among those who called 999 to alert the emergency services about the incident. The recording of his conversation with the paramedics was played in court.

The fireman believes that the voice in the recording that was played did not belong to the man who spoke to him at the scene. There was also no mention of a selfie in the emergency call itself.

– Something that didn’t add up

Earlier in the trial, it emerged that the deceased woman had a fear of heights, the report says Sky News. She is said to have been skeptical about visiting the landmark in the first place, while the man, on the other hand, is said to have been “very excited”, according to the explanation of one of the woman’s friends.

The jury has also been told that Javed has previously alerted the police about the man’s behaviour. By April 2021 at the latest, the woman must give her statement to the police about repeated episodes of violence.

Prosecutors have accused Javed’s husband of killing her. He denies criminal guilt, also for the other conditions he is accused of.

Among other things, it is claimed that he was threatening and violent towards his wife in a hotel in Edinburgh, just days before the supposed murder.

A woman has testified in court about another episode that happened in Leeds the month before Javed died.

– I just knew something wasn’t right. She tried to get away from him, and he was kind of aggressive towards her, she tells the court.

Later, Javed is said to have seemed “very upset and frightened”, says the woman, who confirms that it is the deceased woman’s husband that she has observed.

– A great tragedy

In February, friends and family gathered in Leeds to remember Javed.

– She was very caring and helpful. She worked from a calling that she should help others, says her uncle, Adnan Hanif BBC.

Javed worked as a volunteer at one of the city’s homeless shelters, and several people have referred to her as an important resource for the local community.

The cliff from which she fell, Arthur’s Seat, is a popular landmark. At its highest point, the old volcano stretches 251 meters above sea level.

The landmark is located in Holyrood Park, which is a natural area just outside the Scottish capital Edinburgh.
