On the 30th, when a heavy snow warning was issued in some areas including the metropolitan area, citizens who were injured or in distress while hiking without proper mountaineering equipment were rescued one after another.

According to the fire department, at around 11:50 a.m. on the 30th, a report was received that a hiker in his 60s was injured and could not move near the mineral spring of Mt. Bulam Waterfall in Nowon-gu, Seoul.

At the time of the accident, a heavy snow warning was issued in Seoul. This man fell on an icy road while hiking and injured his pelvis. After receiving a report from another hiker who was with him, the rescue team arrived 30 minutes later and used a stretcher to move a man in his 60s down the mountain.

The fire department understands that the hiker climbed the snowy mountain without wearing crampons and the accident occurred.

At 1:30 p.m., about an hour later, a report was received from a man in his 30s in Jugeumsan Mountain, Naechon-myeon, Pocheon-si, Gyeonggi-do, saying, “I lost my way while coming down the mountain.”

It is known that this hiker was stranded near Dokbawi Rock when he attempted to descend after reaching the summit (813m above sea level) and the snow piled up making it difficult to find the path. At the time, it was discovered that he was wearing sneakers rather than hiking boots or crampons.

The fire department, unable to launch a rescue helicopter, instead deployed 11 pieces of equipment and 24 personnel to rescue the man in about two hours. It was reported that there was no problem with his health.

A fire department official said, “It is advisable to refrain from going out as much as possible during heavy snowfall, and even if you enjoy hiking in the snow in winter, you should prepare hiking shoes, crampons, gloves, hot packs, auxiliary batteries and drinking water and hike in groups.”
