During his military service in Thailand, an American bought a Rolex in 1974. At the time, he paid exactly $ 345.97 for the watch. In an antique show, he wanted to have the value of his Rolex Oyster Cosmograph estimated – the result knocked him out!
–
During the program on Monday evening, the expert Peter Planes told him that a watch like his was extremely rare and therefore worth around $ 400,000. The veteran is completely overwhelmed by the amount and falls backwards to the ground. He bursts out laughing and can hardly believe his luck. But Planes’ appraiser is not yet ready. “Because of the immaculate condition of the watch, the value is even between $ 500,000 and $ 700,000,” he says to the veteran.

40 years in the safe
The ex-Air Force soldier had actually bought the watch for diving. “I heard that Rolex is a good brand for diving,” he says on the show. When he finally owned the watch, he found it too good to take it into the salt water – he put it in a safe. At that time, the copy cost him almost a month’s salary despite a ten percent discount.
–
He kept the piece safe for almost 40 years and only took the watch out three or four times to check it. The veteran now benefited from the careful handling of the watch. Since the watch was never used, it is in perfect condition. How «CNN» writes, the guarantee papers, the original Rolex brochure, the receipt and the original packaging are still available.

“A fabulous discovery”
Apparently collectors love the watch because actor Paul Newman wore a similar model in the 1969 Winning film. The expert Peter Planes says on the show: “It is an absolutely fabulous discovery.” It is one of the rarest Paul Newman models. And: “In these circumstances, I don’t think there is a better one in the world.”
