In the fight against corona, Malta is the first country in the European Union to refuse unvaccinated tourists. The authorities will ban all visitors to the country from Wednesday who have not been fully vaccinated against Covid-19.

Proof of vaccination is mandatory from 14 July. Malta recognizes the European corona passport, as does the British corona certificate. Children accompanying their parents must be able to present a negative corona test. Unaccompanied children are not allowed to travel.

“We will be the first EU country to do this, but we have to protect our society,” said health minister Chris Fearne. Previously, only travelers from Great Britain had to submit proof of vaccination, for other travelers a negative corona test was sufficient.

Only three corona patients in hospital
Malta recorded 96 new infections in the past 24 hours, the fourth consecutive day when the number nearly doubled. A majority of those infections are associated with foreign tourists. Despite the rising infection rates, there are currently only three patients in hospital with Covid-19.

Malta has the highest vaccination rate in Europe: 79 percent of adults are fully vaccinated, 84 percent have received a first shot.
