Maldives Foreign Minister Stresses Importance of COP28 at Dubai Conference on Climate Change

ABU DHABI, 24th August, 2020 (WAM) — Abdullah Shaheed, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives, affirmed that the future of the islands and their people depends on the success of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change at its twenty-eighth session, COP28, which will be held in Dubai next November.
In statements to the Emirates News Agency, WAM, Shaheed said that climate change is an existential issue and poses a major threat to a number of countries in the world, including the Maldives.
“We are confident that the UAE’s presidency of the COP28 conference will produce the required results, as the UAE has proven its pioneering role in this field,” he added, in remarks via e-mail.
He expressed his confidence in the role of His Excellency Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al-Jaber, the appointed President of the Conference of the Parties (COP28), in the success of the endeavors of the next conference, saying, “The presidency of the conference has a major role in reaching unification of opinions, and pushing the negotiations towards taking targeted and effective decisions that guarantee the survival of our people, our culture, our heritage and our history.” .
Speaking about the existential threat faced by the Maldives located in the Indian Ocean, Shaheed said, “We are not alone in this predicament, but we are facing it on the front lines. The surface of the sea, the erosion of our beautiful beaches, the bleaching of coral reefs, and others, are disasters that the rest of the world will face if we do not act today.
He pointed out that the Maldives will demand concrete measures after conducting the first global assessment of progress in the Paris Agreement at COP28, and said, “We need to enhance our ambition after 2025, to ensure a collective reduction in emissions in order to preserve the possibility of achieving zero global warming.” To reach the 1.5°C target, we need to accelerate a just and equitable transition to renewables and away from fossil fuels.
He added that there has been close cooperation between the Maldives and the UAE on the issue of climate change in various multilateral forums for several years.
The Maldivian Foreign Minister said, “The priorities of our two countries coincide on a large scale, which enhances close cooperation between the Maldives and the UAE, especially in the issue of adaptation. I believe that the Maldives and the UAE can work together to achieve positive results, identify common basic interests, and advance negotiations towards reconciliation and unification.” opinions”.
