Malaysian Player Interested in English Premier League Club Brentford

Shocking news came from Malaysia, with one of their descendants reportedly being targeted by Brentford.

Malaysia national team player, Dion Cools reportedly attracted the interest of English Premier League club, Brentford in the transfer market this summer.

Cools, who is skilled at playing both right-back and centre-back, is a Belgian player who naturalized in Malaysia last year.

The 26-year-old defender made his debut with the Harimau Malaya squad in 2021 and has made 11 international appearances so far.

How is the transfer situation?

Cools is currently listed as a player for Danish club FC Midtjylland and has been trusted to appear several times since signing from Belgian giant Club Brugge in 2020.

However, last 2021/22 season, he was loaned back to the Belgian league by strengthening Zulte Waregem.

It is not yet certain whether Cools will return to strengthen Midtjylland for the next season, because the Malaysian website, Daily news reported his name on Brentford’s radar.

The chance to move to England is wide open, because Midtjylland and Brentford are both under the auspices of the same owner, Matthew Benham.

Can Cools with Malaysian passports play in the Premier League?

The problem will be whether Cools can get a work permit to play in the Premier League, because when referring to England’s highest caste requirement, it requires a player to come from a country that is at least in the top 50 of the FIFA rankings.

Malaysia is currently ranked 147th, far from the standard set by the Premier League. It’s just that his status as a European home grown player can be taken into consideration.

Since childhood, Cools studied football in Belgium until he made his professional debut with OH Leuven.

In addition, he has also appeared in the Champions League with the Belgian giant club, Club Brugge.
