Malaysia Returns to National Lockdown Due to Wave 3 of Corona

Government Malaysia re-enforce region lock (lockdown) nationwide starting today, Monday (10/5), due to a surge in infection cases corona virus (Covid-19).

Reported Reuters, The Prime Minister of Malaysia, Muhyiddin Yassin, stated the policy lockdown will take effect until 7 June. During times lockdown, he said, the government prohibited residents from traveling between states or between districts.

In addition, activities that invite crowds such as hospitality are also prohibited.

“Malaysia is facing a third wave of Covid-19 which could trigger a national crisis,” Muhyiddin said in a speech broadcast through the local mass media.

Muhyiddin also stated that the government had temporarily stopped teaching and learning activities in schools and educational institutions for the duration lockdown. However, he continued, the government allowed economic sector activities to continue but did not specify them.

He said lockdown must be enforced because there was detected the spread of the mutation-type corona virus which is more rapidly transmitted. It has also made the health system a bit of a headache due to the surge in patients.

Corona virus cases in Malaysia have continued to surge in recent weeks. As of today, they recorded 3,807 new cases.

To date, the total number of cases of corona infection in the neighboring country has reached 444,484 people. As many as 1,700 of them died.

Since last January, Muhyiddin has established a national emergency status to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
