The Malasaña district of Madrid in 1976: like so many other Spaniards, Manolo Olmedo (Iván Marcos) moves in with his wife Candela (Bea Segura) and their children Pepe (Sergio Castellanos), Ampara (Begoña Vargas) and Rafi (Iván Renedo) from the country to the big city, where she hopes for a better life under the Franco dictatorship. The family moves into a dreamlike, spacious apartment and hopes for professional and private happiness. But it doesn’t take long before the family of six realizes that essential information was withheld from them when they made the purchase. The family is not alone in the apartment where strange things are happening. It looks like pure evil is reaching for the new residents …

Haunted house films often follow a similar pattern: a family moves into a new home, but the supposed dream house soon turns out to be pure horror. James Wan, for example, has proven with “Conjuring – The Visitation” that it can be really exciting even the umpteenth time. After all, we even declared the ghost thriller the scariest film of the year when it was released in 2013. “Malasaña 32 – House of Evil” also largely follows the usual conventions of the genre. After all, the Spanish horror film begins with a family moving into a new apartment and soon being plagued by eerie incidents. However, director Albert Pintó (“Killing God – Love Your Neighbor”) and his four-person team of authors vary the familiar set pieces often enough that, despite the setting in the seventies, they do not …
