JAKARTA – A fisherman off the coast of North Africa accidentally nets rare fish Mola with a very large size. After being investigated by marine biologists, the 2-ton sea monster was released back into the sea.
Quoted from Live Science, Wednesday (10/20/2021), fishermen in Ceuta, the Spanish territory that borders Morocco, found the animal entangled in their net in early October 2021.
They immediately summoned marine biologist Enrique Ostale, who is also head of the University of Seville’s Marine Biology Lab in Ceuta, to examine the large sunfish.
After the team lifted the fish briefly into the air, used a crane and measured it. Finally the rare fish was released back into the sea. “We tried to measure and estimate it weighed at least 2 tonnes,” Ostale told Reuters.
As fish other sea sunfish, all of which belong to the genus Mola, the creature resembles an oval pancake with large, googly eyes stuck to the sides.
Two large, wing-like fins extend from the top and bottom of the fish; in the sea, sunfish swing their flippers to and fro to propel their hefty bodies through the water.
After the sunfish were lifted off the deck, the team measured the animal and determined it was 3.2 meters long and 2.9 meters wide. After measuring the sunfish and taking photos and DNA samples, the team released the animal back into the ocean.
