Insider tip for tomato lovers: The witch’s brew is a mixture of simple home remedies that packs a punch. And you can make it yourself in five minutes.
Nothing can harm healthy, strong tomatoes so quickly. But if they get a rain shower, are under-watered, or have a nutrient deficiency, things can change quickly. Pests and diseases find a gateway. The so-called witches’ brew is a simple mixture of four simple ingredients that everyone has at home. Many hobby gardeners and many gardeners have tested the brew and used it successfully against pests such as aphids and spider mites or against fungal diseases such as late blight, late blight and powdery mildew.

For the witches brew you need the following ingredients:
1-2 tablespoons rapeseed oil8 g baking powder or baking soda1 dash washing-up liquid1 teaspoon denatured alcohol

Mix these ingredients with one liter of water and spray the plants with it once a day for at least a week in case of infestation with fungal diseases (larger distances are also possible on an experimental basis): Especially the tomato leaves from above and below, avoiding the root area. The affected leaves should first be removed and disposed of in the residual waste so that the disease cannot spread.
Some hobby gardeners successfully omit oil and washing-up liquid against fungal diseases, since oil that is too viscous in particular can stick to the leaves and flowers. You can also help yourself by rinsing the leaves with clear water a few hours after applying the solution – tomatoes don’t like that very much either.
The oil is needed against pests
On the other hand, if you want to control pests such as aphids and spider mites, the oil is an important ingredient as it seals the animals’ airways and kills them. In addition, the mixture adheres better to the plants. The pests are regularly sprayed with the witch’s brew until they disappear. The effect of the baking soda also affects the respiration of the animals by taking the oxygen from the air they breathe. The main purpose of the detergent is to combine oil and water well into an emulsion.
