Floating barriers try to keep the rest of the oil away from the coast. Part of Huntington Beach, best known for surfers, has been cordoned off. Authorities have urged people to stay away from animals that have been smeared with oil. “They can do more harm than good.”
The leak is said to have originated in an oil pipeline at sea. How that could have happened is still unclear. The local authorities do tell the newspaper that the leak has been closed.
The local coastguard received an initial report of the leak on Saturday morning (local time). According to a producer involved in the oil project, employees acted quickly to close the gap.
