Major General Peter Cirimwami Takes Office as Interim Military Governor of North Kivu Province

Major General Peter Cirimwami has just officially taken office as Interim Military Governor of the North Kivu province

The new number one of this province was presented by the Deputy Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC), Ychaligonza Jacques during a ceremony in Goma in front of executives of the public administration and of the Army.

“It is not for nothing that we instituted a state of siege, it is so that we can continue to pacify and stabilize the area and this requires the involvement of all of us. I know that the new governor knows the area well. I know he will rise to the challenge,” said the Deputy Chief of General Staff in his speech.

He called on the population to support the army during this period of security crisis in this province.

“People will talk but we are here, we are your army, the only one you have in fact. You are called to support it, I have never seen in other countries the people criticizing their army, we must always promote this army. If you don’t support your army, what will you support?, who are you for and with whom? We are apolitical, we have never been elected so you have to leave us with our hats and not get involved in your political stories,” he added.

As a reminder, the military governor of North Kivu, General Constant Ndima, was urgently recalled to Kinshasa after the repression of an anti-MONUSCO demonstration which left more than 50 dead and several injured.

In this case, a trial is also being held in Goma against six soldiers, all from the Republican Guard, including two high-ranking officers.
