Madrid Reads Theater: A Cultural Campaign bringing Theater Literature to Life

Madrid reads theater is a campaign of the General Subdirectorate of Books that was born with the intention of disseminating theater reading, improving the training of spectators and offering possibilities for shared leisure.

This reading club offers the opportunity to get closer to the theatrical texts of works that are part of Madrid’s theater programming. The works proposed from April to June are:

King Lear, William Shakespeare, is based on a popular tale that appears incorporated into the ancient history of England since the 12th century. The chronicles say that old Lear wanted to know the degree of affection of his three daughters in order to designate the successor to whom he loved the most. Two of them praised him and the youngest replied that she loved him as her father and nothing more. She did not like her to the king, who punished her. Shakespeare expands and transforms the plot, infusing it with a personal vision. The result is an extreme experience of pain, madness and destruction expressed crudely and without reservation.

Tartuffeone of the greatest works of Molière, the best French comedian of all time, and a master in the art of mixing the comic and the dramatic, is the reference on false devotion and hypocrisy. Tartuffe enters the Pernelles’ house with Mr. Orgon, like a beggar in need of asylum. Little by little he appropriates the family’s assets, deceiving whoever he can. Tartuffe represents the false devotee: the kindness and faith of others used for personal gain.

A Fernando de Rojas He is credited with the total or partial composition of one of the masterpieces of universal literature, La Celestina. This work, which emerged in a transition period between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, was originally published under the title Comedy of Calisto and Melibea. The crazy passion for Melibea, daughter of a rich merchant, leads young Calisto to break all barriers and ally himself with an old pimp. This masterful work represents a wise and tragic presentation of human nature in all its complexity, where all its characters act moved by love, hate, blind passion and selfishness.

The activity is completed with attendance at the performances on the billboard.

Activity aimed at adults and young people from 14 years old.
