Macron told Putin during a telephone conversation that “it is necessary to shed light without delay on the circumstances of this assassination attempt and those responsible,” the French president’s office said in a statement.
Macron also informed Putin that analyzes in France had confirmed Germany’s findings that Navalny had been poisoned by the nerve-paralyzing substance Novichok, “in violation of international norms banning the use of chemical weapons.”
Macron has repeatedly advocated improving relations with Russia over the past year. Such efforts have caused confusion among several French allies in the European Union, especially in view of the ongoing Russian aggression in Ukraine.
Analysts say Navalny poisoning has dealt a severe blow to Moscow-Paris ties.
From the beginning of the Navalny crisis, France supported Germany’s firm position that suspicions of poisoning would fall on the Russian state if Moscow failed to explain what had happened to Navalny.
On Monday, Macron “fully expressed solidarity with Germany on the steps to be taken and the consequences to be followed in this situation,” the Elysee Palace said.
“Russia is being asked to bring clarity to a credible and transparent investigation,” Macron said.
Speaking about the crisis in Belarus, Makron emphasized the inadmissibility of foreign intervention.
“He (Macron) reaffirmed the need for a political solution that takes into account the deep hopes of the Belarusian people, without outside interference,” said the Elysee Palace.
On August 20, Navalny was ill during a flight from Tomsk to Moscow, the pilot made an emergency landing at Omsk Airport and was unknowingly taken to Omsk Hospital with signs of poisoning. On August 22, Navalni was transferred from Russia to Germany, where he was treated by the Charite clinic at the University of Berlin.
As the German government said on September 2, there is incontrovertible evidence that Navalny has been poisoned by a nerve-paralyzing warfare substance belonging to the Novichok group.
Navalni was awakened from a medical coma on September 7, but was also disconnected from a ventilator on Monday.
