The party was ruined. Shortly after France defeated Morocco in the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup, riots broke out at Place Bellecour resulting in crowd movements and clashes between members of the extreme rightthugs and law enforcement.

8 arrests were made by the police, some of whom were slightly injured, according to the Rhône prefecture.

Rubbish cans and burned scooters, broken bus shelters…

After the violence on Place Bellecour, strong tensions have also erupted Republic Street, rue du president Édouard-Herriot and in the sector of Jacobin square. Several trash cans were burned, some in front of subway entrances.

The firefighters also intervened several times to put out the fires, under the protection of the police and gendarmes. Metro A meanwhile has previously been closed in several places, including Bellecour or City Hall for safety reasons.

Guillotière station on line D had been closed since 8pm as well as vehicular and pedestrian access to the bridge. There have been no overflows in this area.
