Lyon Rally in Support of Ukraine: Two Years After Invasion, Message to ‘Never Forget’

Several associations organized a rally in Lyon this Saturday, February 24, in support of the Ukrainian people, two years after the start of Russia’s invasion of the country. Around 300 people gathered at Place Bellecour.

The Ukrainian national anthem rang out on Place Bellecour this Saturday, February 24, in Lyon. Around 300 people gathered for this sad anniversary. Their message: “Let’s not forget Ukraine.”

“It’s no longer really fashionable to talk about Ukraine. It’s a conflict that has lasted for two years so we’re not going to talk about it every day but we must never forget. At the beginning there was a lot of gatherings but over time, there were fewer of them”confides Kostiantyn Achkasov, a Lyonnais of Ukrainian origin. “Soldiers are risking their lives, civilian bombings are not stopping. We have to find a way to talk about Ukraine”.

“Ukraine is still fighting”

Ukrainian refugee Daria Achkasova is filled with emotion as she tells her story. “It’s difficult for me because my family stayed in Ukraine. For the moment, I am a refugee here, with my uncle and my grandmother”. Despite her tears, the young woman remains hopeful. “The French are united. It makes me happy that there are a lot of people. It’s difficult but it helps me. I would like the war to end so I can return home and be reunited with my family.”.

For two years, associations supporting Ukraine have been mobilizing in Lyon. This Saturday, they deplore a certain weariness on the part of the population. “This is the third year of war that is beginning and we were able to note in public opinion that there was a certain fatigue. It is not new, it has lasted for about a year but we are here to remind that the ‘Ukraine is still fighting’says Mykola Cuzin, president of the Ukraine 33 association.
