The first “Window of Life” started operating in Germany in 1999. The first in Poland was opened in 2006 in Krakow.

Currently in Poland there are over 60 “Windows of Life” run by Caritas Polska, where – so far – almost 100 children have been left behind.

The “window of life” is a place where a mother can leave her newborn baby anonymously. It opens from the outside and has heating and ventilation installed. When the window is opened by the person leaving the child behind, the alarm goes off, notifying the people who are looking after him.

Then the medical and administrative procedures are launched – the ambulance service and the family court are notified.
