A woman who had been examined and classified as a suspected case in a Berlin clinic after a trip to China since Saturday evening had only been found a cold, according to the Senate Department for Health. Nevertheless, experts assume that Germany will not be spared. “An import of individual cases to Germany must be expected,” writes the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) on its website. Health politicians and the institute, however, consider the precautions already taken to be sufficient and warn the population of excessive fear.

Minister Spahn had recently pointed out that the annual normal flu wave was significantly more dangerous. In the 2017/2018 flu season, more than 25,000 people died.
The corona virus primarily affects the lower respiratory tract. There are also no symptoms known from a runny nose. Since the upper respiratory tract is less affected, the risk of infection is relatively low. In the event that a patient has contracted the coronavirus, measures for isolating the person are provided. However, it is currently not being considered to set up special isolation stations for this purpose. Not every hospital has this. However, normal isolation stations are standard. A corona patient would be transferred to one of these.
In addition, the entire environment is checked, all people with whom there was closer contact. If the patient had traveled by plane, for example, the passengers in the two rows in front of and behind the affected person would be contacted and examined. It is currently not planned to quarantine all passengers on a flight.
Berlin airports have already issued warning notices for travelers. Possible signs are indicated on the posters in German, English and Chinese. Airport personnel should inform passengers with a fever, cough and shortness of breath who come from Chinese regions where the virus has occurred. Airport personnel in Frankfurt are also being prepared for emergencies.
If a suspected case should occur during a flight, the planes would have to go to one of the airports in Frankfurt, Hamburg, Düsseldorf, Munich, Tegel and Schönefeld in Berlin. There are corresponding supply capacities here. There are no direct flights from the most affected Chinese city of Wuhan to Germany.
