LUMC wants to monitor the spread of coronavirus with its own app | NOW

Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) has released an app that collects data about complaints and human behavior. With the COVID Radar app, the LUMC wants to get a good and current picture of how the coronavirus spreads in the Netherlands.

The app is intended to answer a total of fifteen questions about their health and behavior. Researchers hope to gain more insight into how the epidemic develops, who is at greater risk, what the effect of social distancing and where and when the hospital can expect a demand for care.

Users can also see on a map of the Netherlands what the answers of other app users in a postcode area are. They can also filter for the different symptoms that are asked for.

Initially, the LUMC will use the data to gain insight into the distribution and context in its own region. The national data set is also available for other medical institutions and research centers.

Several hospitals use apps to monitor the corona virus. The corona check app that the Onze Lieve Vrouwen Gasthuis (OLVG) introduced earlier this month for residents of the municipality of Amsterdam was already used more than a million times on Tuesday.

The coronavirus in short

  • The coronavirus mainly spreads from person to person via sneezing and cough drops. The chance of becoming infected through surfaces such as door handles is small. This chance decreases if you wash your hands often.
  • You can considerably reduce the chance of spreading by keeping at least 1.5 meters away from others.
  • The corona measures have resulted in an infected person infecting less than one other person on average. Previously, this so-called reproduction number was between two and three.
  • The vast majority of patients have mild (flu-like) complaints.
  • Almost all deaths involve the elderly or other vulnerable persons, such as heart, lung or diabetes patients. If everyone complies with the measures, this reduces their risks.
