“It is entirely possible that the PT has no candidate for the Presidency. The PT may have a candidate for vice. The PT may be a candidate for something else. This is entirely possible, ”said Lula da Silva, in an interview with the online channel TV Democracia, who served two terms as head of state in Brazil (2003-2011).
The former head of state’s response came after he was asked about the situation in neighboring Argentina, in which former president Cristina Kirchner agreed to be Alberto Fernández’s deputy, winning elections in the country at the end of last year.
Lula took the opportunity to affirm that the PT is “the largest left party in Latin America”.
“It is necessary to have a candidate who has the ability to treat the parties with the respect they deserve. There is no point in wanting to discuss with the PT. They cannot want the PT to give up that greatness that the people gave it (at the ballot box) in exchange for nothing. Either you have a bigger candidate than the PT or you don’t have a chance, ”said Lula, one of the founders of the Workers’ Party.
Brazil will have presidential elections in 2022, with the current President, Jair Bolsonaro, linked to the extreme right, admitting a re-election.
