Luhut Talks Worst Scenario, When Covid Breaks 70,000/Day

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The government has prepared a worst-case scenario for the COVID-19 pandemic experienced by Indonesia. Even if positive cases soared to 70 thousand per day.

This was conveyed by Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Panjaitan in a virtual press conference, Tuesday (7/6/2021)

“We have calculated the worst case, more than 40 thousand, how about the supply of oxygen, medicine, hospitals, we have calculated everything,” said Luhut.

As an anticipation, the government will prepare a Hajj Dormitory in Pondok Gede for COVID-19 patients who are not accommodated in several large hospitals such as the Wisma Athlete Hospital.

The Hajj hostel is in decent condition and has been directly checked by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi). Luhut said the capacity could be for 800 patients.

“The Minister of Health has prepared an ICU, such as the Hajj Dormitory Hospital in Pondok Gede,” he explained. The TNI and Polri are also optimized by establishing Emergency Hospitals, especially in the Jakarta and Surabaya areas.

Luhut also ensured the availability of oxygen in the worst situations such as additional cases that reached 70 thousand per day. Likewise with the availability of medicines and other health facilities.

“Until today, we have calculated the oxygen, the scenario has been made by the team, it can reach 50 thousand, even at worst we have made up to 60-70 thousand cases per day. But we don’t expect that to happen,” he explained.

The government also monitors the development of covid outside Java and Bali. Luhut is aware that there is an increase in cases, but so far it is still under control and it is hoped that there will be no excessive worries.

“We must mobilize all our strength and let no one underestimate that Indonesia cannot solve this problem, until today, yes. But if this case is more than 40 thousand – 50 thousand, a scenario will be made of who we will ask for help, we have started to approach that is all.”

On Monday (5/7/2021), the Ministry of Health recorded the addition of 29,745 Covid-19 cases and touched a record high. With this, the total number of Covid-19 cases in the country has reached 2,313,829.

Meanwhile, 14,416 people have recovered from this disease, bringing the total to 1,942,690. Unfortunately, the number of deaths due to Covid-19 continues to increase by 558, bringing the total to 61,140 people.
