The double loading quantity of a McDonnell Douglas MD-11 F: that much would have fit in the freighter version of the Airbus A380. Shortly after the first flight of the biplane, Fedex and UPS canceled their orders in 2006. Airbus then abandoned the A380 F project.

But in the Corona crisis, the A380 is still used as a freighter. A Malaysia Airlines super jumbo only transported goods between Kuala Lumpur and London last week. However, only the cargo hold was used. The cabin remained empty.

Unknown customer

To create additional, provisional cargo space, more and more airlines are having seats removed from their plane’s cabins. This is now happening for the first time on an Airbus A380. Lufthansa Technik is currently preparing the conversion to auxiliary freighters for a customer not mentioned.

Lufthansa Technik does not reveal who the customer of the converted provisional freight A380 is. The maintenance subsidiary has already converted four Airbus A330s from passenger aircraft into makeshift freighters for the parent company Lufthansa. At the request of aeroTELEGRAPH, a Lufthansa spokesman says that the order does not come from the German airline.
