The limit value of 40 micrograms per cubic meter of air for nitrogen dioxide (NO2) to protect health was exceeded in around 70 municipalities instead of 90 cities in 2016, according to the Federal Environment Agency (UBA) according to initial estimates on Thursday.

The highest pollution with NO2 was in Munich despite a slight decrease. According to the preliminary data, 36 other cities have surely exceeded the limit:

According to this, ten cities that exceeded the limit again in 2016: Dresden, Koblenz, Leipzig, Bremen, Fulda, Kassel, Norderstedt, Würzburg, Marburg and Potsdam. Another 15 cities probably succeeded.

The Federal Environment Agency collects and evaluates the data from over 500 measuring stations across Germany. Not all stations work fully automatically. The manually determined values are not yet available for 2017. The Office has therefore only given an estimate for some cities as to whether they comply with the limit value of 40 micrograms per cubic meter of air for nitrogen dioxide (NO2) on an annual average.
