San Diego Loyal earned the victory of the season on Saturday night at Torero Stadium after a dominant 3-0 performance against number one seed San Antonio FC in front of home fans.
Although both teams entered halftime scoreless, San Diego created the best chances throughout the 90-minute game thanks to three second-half goals, first by forward Evan Conway at 65, defender Grant” La Mole” Stoneman at 72′ and Kyle Vassell at 77′.
Goalkeeper Koke Vegas had another standout game with his second shutout in the last four games, including some crucial saves in the first 45 minutes.
The win put the team just four points behind San Antonio and five points ahead of the third-place Colorado Switchbacks. In the last eight games, the team led by head coach Landon Donovan has won seven with their only loss during that span coming on July 9 against LA Galaxy II.
That was the game where defender Kyle Adams was ejected in the 11th minute, but the league rescinded the red card that week.
San Diego Loyal now faces expansion team Monterey Bay, who are unbeaten in their last six games and riding a four-game winning streak on Wednesday night at Torero Stadium.
