“Lower Energy Bills Next Year Due to Falling Gas Transport Tariffs: Dutch Energy Market Update”

The energy bill will be a bit cheaper next year due to falling tariffs for gas transport. Those rates must be reduced by 20 percent, the regulator ACM has decided. And that saves up to 5 percent on the energy bill.

The Dutch energy market has been turned upside down since the war in Ukraine. Gas prices shot up, Russia supplied less gas and trade restrictions came from Europe.

Due to all this unrest, gas transporter GTS earned more from the storage and transport of liquefied gas. Last year, GTS had 20 percent more income than regulator ACM allows. And so the transport rates for 2024 can be reduced.

Falling energy prices ensured that the energy bill has already become much lower in recent months. For example, the market price of gas fell this week to 26 euros per megawatt hour, because gas storage facilities are well filled and there is a lot of gas available. In August last year, the market price of gas was still more than 300 euros per megawatt hour.

You can now fix your energy rates again. Multi-year contracts will even be available again from June. However, from that month onwards, a much higher cancellation fine than now applies.
