A Lowell man has been arrested and charged with robbing a US Postal Service mail carrier in New Hampshire, police said.

Baraka Janvier, 18, of Lowell, was arrested by Nashua police on Wednesday. He is being held on preventative detention at the Hillsborough County House of Corrections and was scheduled to appear in court at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nashua police said in a statement.

Pattern of Robberies Against Postal Service Employees

The robbery is the latest in a series of similar crimes that have been committed against US Postal Service employees. On Dec. 28, a postal worker said his mail key was stolen at gunpoint in Dorchester. Earlier this year, two Brockton men were arrested in connection to the assault and robbery of a US Postal Service mail carrier on Dec. 27.

Arrest Made in Nashua Incident

In this latest incident, police arrested Janvier following an investigation into the armed robbery of a US Postal Service mail carrier in Nashua on Tuesday. Officers responded to the area of Blacksmith Way and spoke to the victim, who reported that he was held at gunpoint by a male suspect who was later identified as Janvier, police said.

“Janvier demanded the victim’s postal keys, which grants access to every mail dispenser in the City of Nashua,” police said in the statement. “Officers were able to make contact with several witnesses and also located video surveillance of the incident.”

Investigators interviewed witnesses, located more video surveillance, and “were able to identify multiple people of interest and the vehicle the suspects used,” police said in the statement, which was released on Wednesday.

“Detectives are still investigating the incident and no other arrests have been made at this time,” the statement said.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to call the Nashua Police Department Crime Line at 603-589-1665.
