Although rarely played, Dejan Lovren will soon get a new contract from Liverpool. Jürgen Klopp still need Lovren on the back line.
Lovren’s contract at Liverpool will expire in the summer of 2021. However The Reds reportedly plans to activate a clause in the Lovren contract, which will keep him at Anfield until the summer of 2022.
Lovren himself only appeared 10 times in the Premier League this season. Klopp more often chose to duet Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez in the heart of Liverpool’s defense.
However, Klopp stressed that Lovren is still important for Liverpool. Klopp still needs the power of the Croatian national defender.
“Dejan played an extraordinary match and has always been an important part of the squad,” Klopp said as reported Sky Sports.
“There is no problem. It’s always like this, we have four central defenders and we usually play with two of them, but we always need all four. This is a very important role.”
“He played in the Champions League final, played in many big games, and has always been a reliable player.”
Russian club Zenit St. Petersburg is reportedly interested in Lovren. But Klopp was reluctant to talk about the rumor.
“There is nothing to say about the contract because it is not something to be discussed in public. I think the situation is clear, Dejan is a Liverpool player,” Klopp said.
“Right now, with the injury (Joel) Matip, we only have three central defenders. You need the qualities we have in the central defender sector to succeed. That is why no one really needs to be discussed,” he said.
