Louisiana shooting leaves one police officer dead and another injured

Baton Rouge, Louisiana – A shooting in the Louisiana capital on Sunday left one officer dead and another in critical condition, authorities said, while a suspect was detained after a several-hour standoff with a special police team.

The two officers were shot in a residential district in the north of the city and one of them died shortly thereafter, Baton Rouge Police Chief Murphy Paul told The Advocate newspaper.

Suspect Ronnie Kato, 36, was detained after a nearly four-hour standoff in which he entrenched himself inside a residence, Paul said, without disclosing the charges he could face. The SWAT team responded to shots fired at him. No one was injured in that shooting.

The shot officers had initially responded to a report of shots fired in the area, police added.

During a press conference Sunday night, the police chief said the deceased officer was a veteran with 21 years of experience in the force, and that his wounded partner has seven years of police work, according to WBRZ-TV television. Paul did not identify the victims.

The second agent was “fighting for his life,” added Paul. “This is a phone call that no boss wants to receive.”

Police released few details about the officers’ shooting or previous events. Paul commented that the investigation remains open.
