Los Angeles Clippers’ Tyronn Lue replaces Phoenix Suns’ Monty Williams in US national team roster | NBA News

Tyronn Lue will replace Monty Williams on USA Basketball’s men’s national team coaching staff for the August World Cup and the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Lue, who is currently the coach of the Los Angeles Clippers, will team up with Golden State’s Steve Kerr, Miami Heat’s Erik Spoelstra and Gonzaga University’s Mark Few.

Kerr remains in place as head coach, with Lue replacing the Phoenix Suns’ Williams on the assistant team.

Williams quit due to family commitments, U.S. men’s national team general manager Grant Hill said.

“I am truly honored to represent our country and join this great group of coaches,” Lue said.

“Coaching USA Basketball has always been a dream of mine, and I’m honored to take on the challenge.”

The United States has yet to qualify for either tournament, but will be looking to secure a World Cup berth at the final qualifying tournament later in February.

G League players are used for qualifying with NBA talent drafted for major tournaments.

Williams was on the coaching staff when the United States won gold at the 2014 World Cup and Rio 2016 Olympics. He was introduced as a member of the national team coaching staff for that cycle in December 2021.

“I am extremely grateful to Grant Hill and Coach Kerr, both for giving me the opportunity to be an assistant coach and for understanding my decision.”

The United States need a win in one of their two qualifiers against Uruguay and Brazil to clinch a World Cup spot and if they qualify they will face the Philippines in the tournament. , which begins on August 25.

They would qualify for the Olympics, depending on their performances in the World Cup.
