‘Lord of the Rings’ series points to gruesome oath from Tolkien’s books

Serial The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power builds up to the Oath of Fëanor. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has already shown quite a few elves. At one point in one of the more recent trailers, we see a group of armored knights in a circle, raising their swords. They are beardless and are clearly elves, all clad in silver and gold.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power might just show the Oath of Fëanor. The soldiers gathered could be brothers and it looks like their armor all have a star engraved on the chest.

The Oath of Fëanor
The Oath of Fëanor is a pact between the elf king Fëanor and his seven sons. In the First Age, Valinor was enlightened by two divine trees: Telperion and Laurelin. Fëanor made three jewels with the light of the trees, the Silmarillion. They were so popular that he became fixated on them (reminiscent of what happens to the owners of the Ring).

Fëanor’s addiction to the Silmarillion was fueled by Morgoth, the original source of evil in Tolkien’s mythology. Morgoth struck at one point with the help of the spider-like creature Ungoliant and managed to destroy the two trees. But not only that: he also killed Finwë (Fëanor’s father), managed to steal the Silmarillion and escaped to Middle Earth.

Thereupon Fëanor gathered his sons, and they decided to rest together only when the Silmarillion had all been recaptured. Anyone who tried to separate the jewels from their rightful owners would be pursued forever and without mercy.

Fëanor led the Noldor to Middle-earth and waged war against Morgoth there. However, the constant war for the Silmarillion turned out to be a never-ending struggle, leading to much bloodshed, but not to the recovery of the jewels.

All in all, a gruesome oath, given the consequences.
