LOOK. Abused and chained: HelloFresh stops Thai coconut milk sales after PETA exposes forced labor of monkeys

HelloFresh will no longer use coconut products from Thailand in the future. That is what the world’s largest meal box supplier decides, following a new PETA campaign. In it, the animal rights organization exposes harrowing animal abuse in Thailand, where monkeys are forced to harvest coconuts in harsh living conditions.

Footage shot at various locations in Thailand shows monkeys chained up climbing tall trees to harvest heavy coconuts. “They are kidnapped or bred in captivity and spend their lives as coconut-picking machines,” it says in one of the undercover campaign videos.

The organization accuses giants like HelloFresh of supporting this forced labour. The meal boxes include Thai coconut milk. Initially, HelloFresh denied the allegations of the campaign, which launched in November 2022. For example, the company would have received “written guarantees” from their suppliers in Thailand that they did not engage in monkey labour.

According to PETA, these warranties are worth little to nothing. Thai suppliers and even the government are said to cover up the forced labor and still illegally use monkeys for the coconut crop. PETA claims that its supporters sent nearly 100,000 emails to HelloFresh in the months after the campaign launched, trying to get the company to change its mind.

HelloFresh eventually succumbs. From now on, the company will no longer purchase Thai coconut milk and will look for alternatives for their supply by the summer. HelloFresh reiterates that it “does not tolerate any form of animal cruelty in their supply chain.” According to HelloFresh Benelux, the coconut products supplied in our country before the campaign already came from Sri Lanka, not Thailand.
