Many MLB players don’t want to negotiate long-term contracts during the regular season to limit distractions. We were watching, at this level, Aaron Judge, who does not seem to be signing for the long term in the Bronx.
Among the rivals of Boston, the contract of Rafael Devers is also to be watched. It’s not as pressing as Xander Bogaerts (since the latter can get out of his contract this winter), but sooner than you think, we’ll be in two years and Devers will be free as air.
He always said he wanted to stay in Boston long term, so the Red Sox started negotiating with him. That said, according to Hector Gomez, the offer would not be good.
It would be “under the value of what he is willing to consider” and he will therefore play the 2022 season under his regular one-year contract, at $11.2 million.
Still according to the journalist, the offer would be better than what Jose Ramirez got, namely $124 million over five years. If we add his already existing 2022 and 2023 contract, the Guardians player will receive $ 150 million by the age of 35.
Establishing Sox player value is difficult. Is it worth more than $200 million? Certainly. Is it worth more than $300 million? I don’t think so, but it would make sense for his demands to be in those waters.
If so, will he stay in Boston? After all, Chaim Bloom let Mookie Betts go a few years ago and besides Trevor Story ($140 million), no big contract was awarded by the Sox leader.
Maybe he was saving money for the future, you might say. And for Boston fans, that’s what I want: to be able to keep the infield intact.
