Loading and unloading traffic jams at Tanjung Priok after extortion is brushed off

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

The typhoon has been waiting for more than three hours to unload and load containers in the Jakarta International Container Terminal (JICT) area, Tanjung Priok, Jakarta, Tuesday (15/6) afternoon.

The container truck driver arrived at around 10.00 WIB. However, he has not been served until 13.30 WIB even though the line is not too long. The tango tool to transport containers was not operational.

Taufan felt that loading and unloading activities slowed down after the police arrested the perpetrators of extortion to thugs in the Tanjung Priok Port area. According to him, loading and unloading services have been slow since Friday (11/6) morning.

“The one that runs a little bit, it’s also slowed down. Normally if the item is at the bottom, if it’s really 15 minutes, it’s finished,” said Taufan to CNNIndonesia.com.

Typhoon said the tango operators worked half -heartedly because they did not get any extra money from the drivers who loaded and unloaded the containers.

Usually, said Taufan, they get money ranging from Rp. 5,000 to tens of thousands of rupiah, depending on the location of the container. The more piled up by other containers, the deeper the driver has to spend.

“If it’s piled up at the bottom, you’ll be given IDR 5,000, ask for more. It looks like you’ll give IDR 5,000,” he said.

Taufan said that the tango equipment operators worked swiftly before any extortion action was taken. Extortion money from the drivers is placed in crackers or mineral water bottles that are tucked between the tango tools.

“If there is a jiggle (given), chase the target. Only then do the pluses go straight away,” said the 50-year-old man.

Another driver, Wawan, said that extortion does not only occur in the loading and unloading area. Since the checkpoint the drivers have to pay Rp2 thousand.

According to Wawan, since the police took action, a friend of his fellow driver even had to wait in line for days to carry out loading and unloading activities.

“Line from seven o’clock in the evening, only loaded in the morning,” he said.

Another driver, Doni, said that the prosecution of extortionists brought positive and negative effects. On the positive side, the drivers’ travel money can be safe. However, at the same time loading and unloading services are slow.

“Instead of waiting for hours, it’s better to pay for it. Everything will go wrong. It’s better to pay Rp. 5,000 if this is the case,” said Doni.

From monitoring CNNIndonesia.com in a number of blocks, the service is quite long. Some trucks have to queue for several hours to carry out loading and unloading activities, as experienced by Taufan.

CNNIndonesia.com has contacted the PR & CSR Manager of PT JICT, Indhira Gita and JICT’s Senior Manager Corporate Secretary Raditya Arrya to ask for his response about the service. However, until this news was written, the person concerned did not respond.

Police officers are intensively arresting extortionists and thugs at Tanjung Priok Port, Jakarta and several ports in other areas.

Especially in Tanjung Priok, extortion is not only carried out by thugs, but also port officials, as the container driver testified.

The police have also arrested the coordinator of extortion in the JICT area, Ahmad Zainul Arifin on Friday (11/6) night. Zainul is said to have ordered other perpetrators to disperse and eliminate evidence.
