LKS asks that unstamped ballot envelopes be recognized as valid – Politics

The Latvian Russian Union (LKS) has also challenged the results of the Riga City Council’s extraordinary elections in the Central Election Commission (CEC), requesting that the unstamped election envelopes, which are not currently included in the results, be declared valid.

In the application, CVK LKS writes that 627 unstamped envelopes were found in Riga 97 and 114 districts, which were subsequently declared invalid. The number of envelopes does not indicate that there has been an unlawful interference in the expression of the will of the voters, however, the party emphasizes that considering unstamped envelopes as invalid is in conflict with the rights of citizens guaranteed by the Satversme, therefore it is not permissible.

The party also pointed out that the election results specified by the LKS may be decisive, namely, if there are 164 ballot papers in the envelopes declared invalid, the number of votes cast for the “Harmony” party could increase by one unit. . At the same time, the party emphasized that taking into account unstamped envelopes could also change the order of parliamentary candidates.

Consequently, LKS asks CVK to ensure the transfer of votes in the two mentioned polling stations and to consider the unstamped envelopes as valid.

As reported, the CEC has so far received three more submissions challenging the election results. Today was the last day when the results can be appealed to CVK.

419 unstamped ballot envelopes have been opened at the Pushkin Lyceum in the Riga polling station, which cannot be included in the election results. At the Riga Classical Gymnasium, there were 208 such envelopes. In both cases, the CEC has already decided to ask the State Security Service to investigate the circumstances of the case.

The results of the Riga City Council extraordinary elections can be challenged by Wednesday.

Yesterday, the CKV informed that election envelopes not counted in the extraordinary elections could affect the number of mandates of the party “S Harmona” and the party association “Jaunā vienotība” (JV) in the newly elected Riga City Council.

The CEC, modeling the impact of unstamped ballot envelopes on the election result, has concluded that, in theory, the number of “Conciliations” and JV mandates in the municipality can be influenced by a part or 320 of the counted envelopes.

Assuming that among the counted envelopes 320 are those in which the vote is cast for the JV, but there are none in which the “Compatibility” was voted, then the JV would gain one additional mandate, while the “Conciliation” would lose one seat.

LETA also reported that the representatives of the Election Commission on the day of the extraordinary elections of the Riga City Council did not come to several people who had applied to vote at their location.
