Living with HIV: My Journey to Diagnosis and Treatment at the AIDS Center

The AIDS center staff quickly got involved and prescribed preventive medications that are taken for low immunity. Then they diagnosed me with tuberculosis of the thoracic lymph nodes, started antiretroviral therapy, and I started treatment. This is typical for HIV infection, you live a normal life, nothing bothers you, and then after about 10 years it hits you.

Antiretroviral therapy is a method of treating HIV infection that consists of regularly taking two or more antiviral drugs.

Tuberculosis developed against the background of AIDS due to the fact that the immune system simply no longer worked.

When it hit me and I began to die, I began to think that maybe it was there after all. Because when HIV was first discovered, I thought that I would definitely live for 10 years. I remember praying then, saying: “Lord, forgive me for being so unreasonable.” Still, during the years of my denial there was a lack of information, but at the AIDS center I talked with a doctor, a psychologist, and various consultants, and this helped change my point of view. The AIDS Center is a place where they will really help, the main thing is to come there. And so I lived in a vacuum, picked up ideas of denial when they sounded from every iron, and this was enough for me to believe. And then the mosaic came together, I believed the doctors, I saw that they wanted the best for me.
