Living in a Campervan: A Tax Guide for Americans and Indonesians

Jakarta – The need for housing in America increases every year. Not all of them have sufficient financial ability to buy a new house or just rent.

One alternative that many Americans choose is to live in a campervan or mobile home. Being cheaper than conventional houses and making it easier to move around makes living in a campervan quite tempting.

Plus living in a campervan, Americans don’t have to pay property taxes or rental fees. This is because the campervan is not part of the property.
The taxes that will be imposed are sales tax, local tax, state and federal tax on any income received, for example from salaries.

Living in a campervan and constantly moving around still costs money not to pay for petrol, daily meals, or parking fees if you keep it in a commercial place. If you do not do this, the campervan occupant will still be in violation of the law and may be subject to a fine.

So, how do you pay tax as a campervan occupant? Quoting from Nomadic News on Sunday (25/2/2014), here are the procedures.

Determine State Domicile

If you just move in a campervan, the occupants will definitely not have a home address. If asked, they will probably answer with the home address of their parents or relatives.

So what about the information contained in the tax? Fill in your residential address before deciding to move by campervan. Filling in the addresses of parents or close relatives is also not a problem as long as you are responsible for filling it in.

Submitting Several Files

Just as you would when living in a house or apartment, campervan residents file several things including federal income tax returns and state tax returns.

Imposition of Campervan Tax in Indonesia

According to urban observer, Yayat Supriyatna, campervans or mobile homes are not suitable as long-term residences in Indonesia. This mobile home is more suitable as a recreational residence.

“It’s not (a solution). The concept is a recreational concept and a future trend. If one day people change their minds, they don’t need to have children or a wife, the important thing is to have a car, if you want a mobile home, it can happen,” said Yayat.

Using a campervan as a residence is also not yet legal in Indonesia because campervans are not subject to Land and Building Tax (PBB), but only vehicle tax.

“Yes. The category is motor vehicle tax. As a tourist car. It’s still a non-residential motor vehicle aspect,” he said.
