Toto about miami

From the streets of Baku to the streets of Miami. We’re happy to be back on track so quickly after an interesting but challenging weekend in Baku. The new sprint format has thrown up a few surprises, and we now need to evaluate the merits of this format and see if we need to revise it again.

Unfortunately, we didn’t quite get our car in the right setting window in practice. That made the rest of the weekend difficult. Our race pace looked competitive against Ferrari and Aston Martin but with overtaking being so difficult we weren’t able to prove it. That’s pretty much where our car is at the moment, but we also know that small differences from weekend to weekend can have a big impact.

So we’re looking forward to coming to Miami and getting back on track there. We will use the few days in between to gain as many insights as possible and to put ourselves in the best possible position. The track is completely different compared to the last races. There is a good mix of corners, with some high-speed sections, long straights, but also tight, twisty sections.

It will be a busy weekend with lots of off-track activities and events for the team and our partners. There was an incredible buzz last year and I have no doubt that this year’s event will be spectacular again.

Facts & Figures: Miami Grand Prix

  • The 5.412km Miami International Autodrome is the eleventh track to host a US Grand Prix – the Las Vegas track will be the twelfth circuit later this year.
  • In terms of top speeds achieved, Miami is in the front range compared to other racetracks. Only in Monza, on the Circuit Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico and on the new track in Las Vegas are higher top speeds expected this season. Miami, along with Baku, is one of the circuits where drag matters the most.
  • That’s partly because the car needs to be optimized for the 1.28km straight between turns 16 and 17.
  • Ambient temperatures are expected to reach and possibly exceed 30°C.
  • This is the second highest statistically expected ambient temperature of the year after Qatar and ahead of Singapore.
  • Conditions were similar at last year’s Grand Prix and George described the race as “brutal”. This was partly due to the high outside temperatures, but also due to the humidity.
  • Several small changes were made to the track after the first edition of the Miami Grand Prix last year.
  • This includes the track being resurfaced ahead of this year’s race, designed to give drivers better grip and improve overtaking opportunities.
  • Also the positioning of some Tecpro barriers as well as the “Rumble Strips” were changed ahead of the weekend.
  • Off the track, team hospitality in the paddock has been moved to the field at Hard Rock Stadium. A new Paddock Club building was also constructed.
  • The track is very narrow in places, especially in the last sector, which increases the risk of safety car deployments and virtual safety cars. Sector one has faster, fluid corners and the middle sector has tighter, twisty sections. Sector three is dominated by the long back straight and the hairpin at Turn 17.
  • The track layout poses a challenge for the car set-up, as downforce is required in the fast corners at the beginning of the lap (T1 to T8) and especially in the twisty T11-T16, without creating too much drag on the two very long straights.
  • Good mechanical grip or traction at low speeds is crucial for lap time here as T8, T16 and T17 are all slow corners leading onto long straights.
  • The dark new tarmac, the hot ambient temperatures and the rather abrasive surface (due to blast cleaning) result in very high tire temperatures, making management a challenge in the race.
  • Last year there was a virtual safety car deployment which then turned into a full safety car phase.
