The number of coronavirus infections in the United States has increased by a record 52,898 in the past day. It is the largest daily increase in the US since the outbreak of the virus, according to the latest figures from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

It is the sixth time in a week that more than 40,000 new cases have been recorded. The US, meanwhile, has 2.68 million infections. The death toll in the US from Covid-19 has risen to over 128,000.

The record was also broken on Wednesday. Then 47,000 new infections were counted. The country’s leading expert on infectious diseases, virologist Anthony Fauci, warned earlier this week that the numbers could even double quickly. “We are clearly not in control now,” he said.

States, meanwhile, are taking new measures in an effort to contain the virus. In California, large parts of the state have to be locked again after a record increase in the number of corona infections. The relaxation of the measures is being reversed for the people of Los Angeles and surrounding areas, and in 18 other hard-hit regions. The new lockdown applies for at least three weeks.

US President Trump is going to wear a mask against corona when things get “tight” with other people around him. Trump has barely been seen in public with a mouth mask until now.
