Lithuania Successfully Tests Disconnection from Russian Power Grid

Lithuania has carried out a test disconnection from the Russian power grid and isolated operation of its own power supply system. This follows from press release Lithuanian power grid operator Litgrid.

The tests were carried out from 11 am to 9 pm (coincides with Moscow time). As the operator notes, the Lithuanian power transmission system for the first time worked in isolation from the Russian one. Electricity during this period was supplied by local power plants, as well as through imports from Sweden and Poland, follows from the message Litgrid.

The testing took place as part of the preparation of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia for a complete disconnection from the power systems of Russia and Belarus. To do this, they need to leave the BRELL energy ring, which implements a synchronous mode of the energy systems of the mentioned countries.

The shutdown was originally planned for 2025. In the summer of 2022, Lithuania proposed to reach the result ahead of schedule – already in 2024. Operators in Estonia and Latvia said they were not ready to disconnect from BRELL by this time.
