Lithuania Post plans to provide postmen in three major cities of the country with electric vehicles

Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipėda postmen will deliver parcels and correspondence to customers in the near future only by electric vehicles. Lithuanian Post has started tests of electric vehicles offered by different manufacturers in order to evaluate their possibilities and choose the best solution.

It is planned that up to 100 different types of electric vehicles will be provided to postmen working in the country’s three largest cities. It is expected that the first postmen working in these cities will switch to this new, sustainable transport by 2023. the end This step will be the last stage of the project of motorization of Lithuanian postmen. Currently, all postmen, except for those working in Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipėda, already serve customers while driving cars.

“The decarbonisation of the transport sector is taking place rapidly around the world in order to reduce the negative impact on the environment. Post offices in Croatia, Italy, Sweden and Denmark are already successfully using various electric vehicles to deliver parcels to customers. I welcome the decision of the Lithuanian Post Office to move further in the direction of more sustainable solutions and to test less polluting, innovative electric vehicles in its daily activities and to look for “green” solutions in other company activities as well”, says the Minister of Communications of the Republic of Lithuania, Marius Skuodis.

“Implementation of more environmentally friendly solutions is one of the strategic goals of Lithuanian Post. We have set our sights by 2025. to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by a quarter, compared to 2020. The company’s electric transport in the country’s major cities will directly contribute to lower pollution and carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere, as well as a lower noise level in the streets. Electric courier transport has already caught on with colleagues in other countries .,” says Jonas Sadauskas, Head of the Lithuanian Post Network.

In order to ensure fast and convenient delivery of parcels, Lithuanian Post has been investing in new vehicles for postmen for several years. Last year, a contract was signed for the purchase of 300 new passenger cars on a lease basis. They are intended for the motorization of postmen who work outside the three largest cities of the country and the opportunity to serve customers while driving cars. The main reason for the motorization of postmen is the desire to improve working conditions and the changing postal market, due to which the volumes of traditional postal services are rapidly decreasing and the volumes of parcels are increasing.

At the moment, the letter carriers of Lithuanian Post are equipped with more than 800 vehicles.
