The Newells Old Boys dream of a return of their former youth player Lionel Messi. Javier Mascherano, long-time companion of La Pulga, is skeptical whether there will be a reunification.

“Leo has always indicated that he wanted to play in Argentina, but we have to see if the conditions are right,” Mascherano told TYC SPORTS.

Lionel Messi moved from the Old Boys to FC Barcelona when he was 13. His contract expires at the end of the season. It is still open whether the contract will be extended. Messi doesn’t want to make a decision until the end of the season.

Barça, Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Miami and Newells are considered interested parties, Mascherano, who played for Barça with Messi from 2010 to 2018, knows: Everything has to be right for Messi to say “Yes”.

The defensive strategist: “He’s a very intelligent boy. He’s going to get a lot of offers. It’s difficult to put yourself in his shoes because it’s your personal decision. It’s not just about the sporting side, but also about other factors like that Family.”

While Messi wants to play for a few more years, Mascherano has already hung up his shoes. In November, the 147-time international (record ahead of Javier Zanetti; 143) announced the end of his career.
