Limits to the neighbors: opening with confusion

Slovenia issued a regulation yesterday that lifted coronavirus entry restrictions for EU citizens. This means that Austria can also enter the country again without any restrictions in the future. All borders with neighboring countries are opened, also with Italy, Hungary and Croatia. The railway crossing in Spielfeld will also be opened.

But the relief apparently does not apply to the return trip. The Austrian entry restrictions remain in place. According to the Ministry of the Interior, the requirement for a negative corona test, which is not older than four days, applies until May 31, otherwise the self-quantant in Austria lasts for 14 days. There are exceptions for commuter traffic, commuter traffic, family reasons to be considered and for the care of animals. Will the border with Slovenia be fully opened by summer? There are two approaches: one that borders need to be dismantled and that people can go to the sea in Croatia. On the other hand, that domestic tourism should be promoted. Political considerations in Austria are ongoing.

The borders with Germany, Switzerland and Liechtenstein should, as reported, be fully opened on June 15th. Germany now only wants to put inbound travelers into 14-day quarantines that have come from countries with more than 50 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in the previous seven days.

Talks with Germany

The currently different practice of cross-border family visits between Germany and Austria causes confusion for many people. Germany defined: Visiting or picking up underage children or spouses is allowed, visiting partners, grandparents or other relatives is not. In Austria, the Ministry of the Interior names “reasons in the family that are particularly worthy of consideration, which can be made credible in the control”. According to information from the Ministry of Health, this includes e.g. B. Visits by family members in the event of illness or their own children within the framework of custody duties, a visit to the life partner, as well as events such as baptism, birthday, funeral or wedding.

Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (VP) said at the state governors’ conference in Linz on Friday that detailed coordination with their German neighbors is still ongoing. As far as families are concerned, there are already good regional solutions. “Where that is not yet the case, we try to create it.”

But basically nothing has changed in the Corona regulations. Accordingly, only commuters, relatives of medical professions, EU citizens in transit and family members are allowed to cross the German border in urgent cases. Border crossings simply out of whim, for example for shopping, are still not possible until June 15th, even if, as reported, there have only been random checks since Friday and smaller, previously completely closed border crossings are now open again.
