Like every year, hundreds of people witness the equinox in Tula

Tula de Allende, Hgo. Like every year, at noon on March 21, the traditional pre-Hispanic ceremony was held to welcome the spring quinox, in the archaeological zone of Tula.

Hundreds of national and foreign tourists gathered in the square located in front of the superb temple of Tlahuizcalpantecuhtli, where the four gray rock effigies known as the Atlantes of Tula, 4.5 meters high, are located.

There the traditional ritual was carried out to welcome the spring equinox. For Rodrigo Xaxni, shaman, traditional doctor and cultural promoter who goes to Tula every year to witness the ritual, March 21 is when the renewal of things begins. , like the leaves of plants and “flowers are born again.”

He recalled that the ancient settlers of Tula “worshipped Xipe-Tótec, one of the most important gods of pre-Hispanic Mexico, since he had the power to transform the earth’s surface from arid and inert to humid and alive.”

“He is the god in charge of fertility and the regeneration of agricultural cycles.”

“It is the birth of a new vegetation or a new skin for our god Xipe Tótec, the great skinned lord.”

This year it was the turn of two traditional dance groups to lead the rituals, both from the town of La Cañada in the municipality of El Marqués, state of Querétaro.

These are Aztec Warriors and Warriors of the Fifth Sun, whose members performed dances of the ancient Mexica for two hours, with their characteristic combat attire,

Alejandra González, a young member of Guerreros Aztecas who represented a jaguar, said that the group has already existed for more than a hundred years, since it was founded in 1919.

He added that in the town of La Cañada there are more than 300 members that make up the artistic group, which in addition to its objective is the preservation of traditions and promoting the pleasure of dancing.

He said that from the age of six “he got a taste for dance” when he saw how his grandparents did it, dressed in traditional costumes.

Traditional doctors from other states of the country were placed along the square.

One of them is Manuel Huehuecoyotl, originally from the Sierra de Puebla and who from a very young age learned the trade of cleaning with incense and herbs.

Unlike other traditional doctors who, to do their cleansing, evoke spirits who supposedly give consultations through their bodies and do magical healing with their hands, Manuel Huehuecoyotl said that this was spiritualism and that he did not resort to that.

Unlike Teotihuacan and other archaeological zones in which visitors are prohibited from climbing pre-Hispanic buildings, in Tula it is still allowed to climb the pyramid of the Atlanteans, each surrounded by a fine wire mesh to prevent them from being damaged by the elements. visitors.

Some of the tourists lay down and others knelt on the stone near the Atlantes, some with their arms open to, according to them, “fill themselves with solar energy.”
